This November I had the pleasure to attend RubyConf 2024 in Chicago. I have not attended a tech conference in person since 2019 at EmberConf in Portland. It was a great time and a good way to meet people and reinvigorate my interest in Ruby as a performant, beautiful language with a bright future. What was interesting about the conference was the distinct atmosphere of post-Covid social awakening, cautious optimism and apprehension over AI, and soberness over the current state of the market.

As I’ve gained experience working in a variety of company types, sizes, missions, and stages of development, I’ve come to realize that the only “right way of doing things” in terms of software development at an organization is to align the process and outcomes with the organizational objectives. And this includes both short and long-term objectives as well. As has been said before, every line of code (and really everything else) is a (business) decision. “Common sense” and best practices can be amorphous around the edges; even things appearing settled can fall apart in an unconventional environment.
